AMERICAN BALLADS AND SONGS
And then he sat down by her side
While bitter tears did flow, And cried, "My own, my charming bride,
You never more will know."
He twined his arms around her neck
And kissed her marble brow; His thoughts flew back to where she said
"I'm growing warmer now."
'Twas then that cruel monster, Death,
Had claimed her as his own; Young Charlotte's eyes were closed for aye,
Her voice was heard no more.
He carried her out to the sleigh,
And with her he rode home; And when he reached the cottage door
0 how her parents mourned.
Her parents mourned for their daughter dear, And Charles wept o'er the gloom.
Till at last young Charles too died of grief And they both lie in one tomb.
Young ladies, think of this fair girl
And always dress aright, And never venture thinly clad
On such a wintry night.
